Making Yourselves at Home

Making Yourselves at Home is a series of drawings exploring young adulthood through still life. In this series, I navigate my direct experience of living in a share house by paying attention to the everyday assemblages which form as part of communal living. My aim is to capture a sense of appreciation and adoration for the otherwise overlooked objects in my home, encouraging the pride and joy that I feel towards the idea of having ownership over such things. The production of these drawings intends to reposition the value of the subject matter from the common and unseen to elements of my own identity. The process of drawing and the materiality of oil stick has allowed me to visually show the interactions between these objects and my body in a way that worships and caresses their form and signifies their consistent usage throughout my day-to-day life. The expressive rendering of familiar subject matter allows for the construction of a narrative around these objects and the roles they play in the identities of myself and the other young adults that share my home with me. Overall, these objects nurture and support my sense of self as I work towards building a space for myself in contemporary society and culture.
